FOUNDERS STORY

What "AKUMEN" means to me..

Motivated internally. Built through loyalty. Driven by purpose.

A statement from our Founder: PATRICK LEMMOND,

“Life doesn’t begin with breath — it begins with awareness. Some people go a lifetime without ever truly living, loving, or being awake. For me, that awakening happened in a third-grade classroom at Magazine Elementary School.

It was free time , (center time,) what say you. — the color wheel of carpet squares, the boulder sized bean bags, and muffled chatter. This comfort is something only experienced in a small town elementary, My friend Justice and I sat reading: myself, Captain Underpants; him, a book of Sharks. Somewhere between laughter and imagination, we started talking about dreams. “I wish I had a train full of diamonds.” “I wish I had unlimited food.” “I want an indestructible car.” We drew our dreams in marker and paper, and in that moment, something in me switched on.

Even as a kid, surrounded by uncertainty and instability, my ambitions came from survival — from wanting stability, warmth, and the simple security my environment couldn’t provide. Others saw me as the “unfortunate kid,” but I saw myself as a work in progress — a spark waiting for structure.

The Lessons of Struggle

My childhood wasn’t built on comfort. My biological mother battled addiction and absence, from my birth, and it was her demise. I used strategy through school, often disruptive, driven by a need I didn’t yet understand.  I was IN-Voluntarily enrolled  into Civilian Student Training Program at Camp Robinson in Little Rock at 13, something changed. I discovered the value of order, structure, respect, and loyalty — concepts I had never truly experienced but immediately recognized as keys to survival. this would be fundamental in the creation of what the future held for me in 2018.

A week after I graduated that program, Easter 2014, the woman who raised me — my real mother in every way that matters — was hospitalized. She never recovered. Never came home,  Losing her shattered my world, and reshaped the very level of consciousness I already experienced daily.  I was 13, standing alone in a decaying home, already haunted by loss, but learning what resilience meant. Two years of re-adjustment, refinement, and recollection. By 16, I had been expelled from school for inability to recover credits.  Time lost and inability to formulate any structure of the education and systems received over my recent absence, due to my life situations. earned my GED within days, and began rebuilding my life piece by piece.

The Spark of Akumen

In 2017, I started working at Medley & Sons Auto Body in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The owner, Ron Medley, once told me:

“There’s nothing more important than the time you take to do things correctly — the first time.”

That simple truth changed my perspective. I began viewing every action, every mistake, and every choice as a blueprint for something bigger. I became obsessed with growth, refinement, and building something permanent.

The word Akumen was born from Acumen — meaning insight, sharpness, and understanding in business. To me, it came to represent the pursuit of clarity and purpose through struggle.

The Mission

Akumen Home & Land Apparel  isn’t about clothing alone — it’s about armor. Clothing shields us from uncertainty, offers dignity in struggle, and gives identity when everything else feels lost.

Our Buy-One, Donate-One model exists to bring that same protection and comfort to those who need it most — homeless individuals, veterans, underprivileged families, and children growing up as I did: uncertain, but hopeful.

Every item purchased through the  Foundation Collection fuels direct community impact — because this is more than commerce. It’s loyalty in motion.

The Movement

The Akumen Founders Collection lays the groundwork for our long-term vision:

  • • Funding community shelters and clothing centers
  • • Developing empowerment programs for families in transition
  • • Creating jobs, networks, and systems that help people rebuild

When you wear Akumen, you carry more than fabric — you carry purpose. You share the weight of those who still walk through uncertainty. You stand for strength, loyalty, and community.

Akumen Home & Land will also release a work-line collection, a signature, and premium collection.

A Final Word

To my teachers, mentors, and those who believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself — thank you. To those who said I would never be anything, I appreciate you just as much. To those still in the dark — your story isn’t over yet.

Akumen Home & Land is the proof that from the ruins, something greater can rise. From pain, we can build power. From struggle, we can build structure. From loyalty, we can build a legacy.”
